A Place for Horse-Crazy Kids

A horse's stride is usually 12 feet long.  When you are jumping, you have to know how many feet are between two fences, so you can tell how many strides your horse will take.

The tricky part is that you must take off 6 feet for the landing, and 6 feet for the takeoff when calculating the strides in a line.  So, if a line is 60 feet long, it is really 4 strides (not 5!).

Horses are measured in "hands" which equal 4 inches each.  A pony must be under 14.2 hands.  Ponies are categorized as small, medium, or large ponies.
