When a horse has a colic, or a bad stomach ache, and it goes to the hospital, they will do an ultrasound on it to see the insides of the horse.
An ultrasound is a machine that sends soundwaves into the horse and then the computer captures a picture depending on the sound that comes back.
I saw them put alcohol on the horses stomach before they did the ultrasound when I was at the hospital with a friend and her sick horse. I wonder why they use alcohol, I thought?
My vet, Kathy Baxendale, told my mom that they use alcohol because it helps conduct the sound waves. The alcohol is good because it breaks up some of the oils in the horse's hair, so the sound can go through and back better. In people, they use gooey gel stuff but for horse hair that isn't shaved, alcohol works better.
| When they examine a horse in a hospital stall, they back the horse up to the opening of the door and then the vet can stand behind the door while doing hte exam. This way, the vet won't get kicked.

My Grandpa is a retired horse vet. I'm going to ask him for information to put on here.
